Watermelon, Goldfinch (Citrullus lanatus)
These cute little watermelons turn golden yellow when ripe - no more guesswork! Melons weigh about 3 lbs, with bright pink, sweet flesh and plenty of seeds for spitting (or saving). An early ripener (70 days) that’s well adapted to short season areas. Popular choice for children’s gardens. For best taste, harvest when rinds are mostly yellow with a greenish tinge at the ends. Developed in 1959 as “Golden Midget” by Elwyn Meader and Albert Yaeger at University of New Hampshire, and renamed for the goldfinches that grace our fields in the late summer.
